KhattarWong sends her heartiest congratulations to Mr Sat Pal Khattar on his achievement as one of the eight foreigners and only Singaporean to be awarded ‘Padma Shri’ status in the Republic of India, in recognition of his contribution to the Trade and Industry field. Mr Khattar founded Khattar, Wong & Partners in 1974 as a three man practice that provided specialised tax services to only five clients. Today, KhattarWong has grown to be one of the largest local law firms with more than 120 lawyers and professionals in offices and associated offices in Singapore, China, Hong Kong SAR and Vietnam. While he has been conferred many awards and is widely acknowledged as a prominent lawyer, community leader and businessman in Singapore, Mr Khattar remains a very humble man. The most impressionable trait of Mr Khattar was that he was humble and caring to any and every client. ‘Be it a multimillionaire, or a taxi driver, he would walk them personally to the lift, shake their hands and bid them good bye’, recalls Mr Abdul Rashid, Senior Partner at KhattarWong. That very culture of humility was what inspired the firm’s ‘open door’ policy, which is still practiced today. Mr Khattar set the precedence with his own door being always open, encouraging communication and mutual respect amongst lawyers and staff at every level. He built a solid foundation for our firm and continued to serve as a consultant 4 years after his retirement. He was also regularly involved in our firm’s charity events and even internal events such as our annual dinner and dance. In his Straits Times interview (published 22 February 2011), Mr Khattar said he is unlikely to pen his memoirs as he does not think his life is important or interesting enough. The individual lives he has touched and the influence he has left at KhattarWong, begs to differ. We are proud to have Mr Khattar as the founding leader of what is today, KhattarWong.
