Title of ST Article: Contempt of court laws not a gag on free speech:CJ Chief Justice Chan mentioned that contempt of court laws are here to stay but not dealing with such actions may lead to the weakening of public confidence in the judiciary. His views are in relation to an interview published in the latest issue of Inter Se, a Singapore Academy of Law journal and regarding the recent headlines which profiled cases such as the British Author, Alan Shadrake who was jailed and fined for scandalising on Singapore’s judiciary and the death penalty. Senior Counsel Amarjeet Singh commented that the enactment of court contempt laws should be comprehensive so that it would be a convenient one-stop reference on the law of contempt in both civil and criminal cases.
